History
St John’s Wood formed part of the medieval Forest of Middlesex and was owned by the Knights Hospitaller until the land passed to the Crown following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in the 16th century. For much of the following period, the area remained largely rural, situated on the edge of London.
In the early 19th century, the Crown Estate began developing the district as one of the capital’s first planned suburbs, introducing wide avenues, substantial villas and generous gardens. This early planning established the spacious residential character that continues to define St John’s Wood today.
